History, Culture & Tourism Facts

The State of Kuwait is a small constitutional monarchy on the coast of the Persian Gulf, enclosed by Saudi Arabia to the south and Iraq to the north and west. The name is a diminutive of an Arabic word meaning “fortress built near water.”

Kuwait was formed when several clans from different Middle Eastern tribes settled near the area now known as the “Kuwait Bay”.

The Al-Sabah family was chosen by the people of Kuwait. This process is known as “mubaya’a”, which means “to give one’s self” in Arabic. Before the Kuwaiti constitution was drafted, the Al-Sabah family ruled Kuwait in practice (de facto).
